Please learn from my experience, I have been in the tree service business for many years and have seen the Mohowk, or "hurricane trim" stunt the growth or kill many palm trees. Often, a property owner with palm trees thinks either 1)they can save a tree from falling in the event of a hurricane by giving the wind a little less to grab onto during high winds, or 2) The want to save time and money by reducing the amount of times per year they need to trim. I'm sure everyone has seen the result at some point.has seen the results the same as the ones in the picture.
The reality is that trees get their energy from photosynthesis, that happens in the fronds, and stores a lot of nourishment in the fronds also. Chopping the tree up only weakens the tree to the point that it won't stand strong even during a light breeze much less hurricane strength winds.
We do need to trim the dead fronds back and remove anything that might fall and injur something or someone from the trees. We recommend about twice per year trimmings.
Only widespread knowledge will be able to solve this problem so spread the word.
