Review – Acoustic Research Portable Wireless Speaker AWS53

An awesome way to listen to music while gardening

Acoustic Research Mission-Style Portable Wireless Speaker

The thing about Home Depot is that you know what you are going in for, but you don’t know with what you will come out. Case in point – I went in for an attachment for my Ryobi Expand-it™ Gas Power Head (future review) and came out with an Acoustic Research Portable Wireless Speaker AWS53.

I was walking around our local HD store when I saw a display of these speakers. They had one out, hooked & powered up. So… I took my iPhone out of my pocket and plugged it in to hear what the AWS53 sounded like. Wow! Not too bad. Sometimes when I am doing yard work I like to listen to something other than the voices in my head so I power-up my iPhone and plug in my ear buds. But sometimes the phone in a pocket, the wires hanging down and the buds in the ears can be uncomfortable when pulling weeds or doing other gardening activities. Ta-da! That’s where the Acoustic Research Portable Wireless Speaker AWS53 comes in.

The AWS53 offers two ways to connect to music; first there is a 900MHz wireless transmitter which broadcasts 150ft from an audio source (like a shelf stereo, AV system, personal computer or other device with an earphone out option). Second, the speaker has a built-in 3.5mm jack that offers a convenient connection option to use almost anywhere. It is as easy as connecting an MP3 player, smartphone or other device with an earphone out option to the speaker.

The Acoustic Research Portable Wireless Speaker AWS53 is great for outdoor entertaining with crystal clear high quality wireless audio (with bass boost). Purchase one speaker and the default play mode is monaural. Purchase two of them and with the transmitter one speaker can be set to play the right channel while the other speaker plays the left channel and now the music plays in stereo!

AWS53 Features:

  • Totally portable high quality full, rich sound with two ways to connect

  • Great for home: 900MHz wireless up to 150ft from the transmitter

  • Great on the go: Speaker's built-in audio input connects right to MP3 player or smartphone

  • Simple to set up, both wirelessly and with the 3.5mm input

  • Great sound in a compact form, with 2-way acoustic design and bass boost (2” tweeter, 3” woofer, 5 watts RMS)

  • Frequency response: 40 Hz – 15 kHz

  • Compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod; works with Android

  • Weather-resistant design perfect for outdoors

  • Flexible: speaker runs on AC adapter (included) or 6 AA batteries (sold separately)

  • Includes speaker, transmitter, 2 AC power adapters, mini-jack to stereo lead adapter, and 3ft mini-jack cable

  • Expandable: add multiple AR wireless speakers to enhance your outdoor environment

  • 900MHz wireless transmitter offers 3 selectable broadcast frequencies, with Automatic Level Control

  • 1-year limited warranty
