Hot New Impatiens from Ball Horticultural Company

Orchid-look New Flowers Add "Spark" to your Garden

Long a garden staple, impatiens pepper thousands of gardens across the country in vibrant shades of pink, red and coral.  After all, today’s fantastic hybrids like Dazzler® and Super Elfin® are easy to grow and perform reliably in the garden all season long.  But still, something was missing from the impatiens color palette: yellow.  Strong-performing yellow impatiens had eluded plant breeders for years.

Although the basics of plant breeding are straightforward in principle, achieving successful results can take years of experimentation in technique.  Ball Horticultural Company is one of those rare breed companies willing to patiently see success through.  So it was in their genetic make up to tackle the creation of yellow impatiens that gardeners would love.

Standard seed impatiens doClick to Enlarge not have a gene for yellow, so the journey took Ball to the wild, where a species was identified as “having potential” for yellow flowers.  But as expected, the wild species brought with it undesirable garden characteristics. Cross-pollination techniques were used to attempt to marry the standard seed impatiens and the wild yellow species, but scientists were unable to capture mature seeds that would create new plants.

It was then that the journey took a detour.  Ball scientists developed technology to rescue immature seeds, help them develop and germinate. Almost like a neonatal care system for seeds, this technique eventually yielded hybrid yellow impatiens – appropriately named Fusion™ Glow.

Two more years of plant trials toClick to Enlarge ensure superb garden performance would push the development to a total of four years.  But yellow also gave way to a whole new rainbow of five exotic shades never before seen in the demure impatiens class, including the fiery orange in Radiance and the gradient warm shades in Sunset.

Beyond unique colors, the Fusion series features interesting orchid-shaped blooms that provide non-stop color from spring to fall with minimal care.  They perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade.  Look for them at independent garden centers as part of the Simply Beautiful® collection.

The Simply Beautiful® collection Click to Enlargefrom Ball Horticultural Company is available exclusively at independent garden centers.  Developed from superior plant genetics, the collection provides great gardening results with minimum fuss.  Find local retailers, plant information and gardening tips at www.simplybeautifulgardens.com.
