Aids for the Arranger
So your garden is in full
bloom and you would like to bring some of that beauty
indoors and make an arrangement, here are some tips to
help you...
To Prevent Closing of
Certain Flowers drop
melted wax in the center of water lily or passion flower
this technique will hold tulips or poppies at the
desired stage and lessen shattering.
To Hold Flower Buds
for a Party Use a collar of wax paper fastened with
a paper clip. Remove the paper clip and wax paper just
before the guests arrive.
To Prevent Leaves From
Curling spray the undersides with a clear plastic
spray available from craft supply stores.
To Seal Stems sear
the stems with a flame or dip the stems in boiling
water. When using boiling water protect the foliage or
leaves with a piece of paper or dish towel so they will
not be damaged. This technique works well for flowers
with milky sap such as poinsettias, poppies and so
forth.
To Curve Stiff Stems
place the stems slantwise in a container while
conditioning. This works for gladiolus, delphinium,
lupine, snapdragons, etc.
While Conditioning
keep the atmosphere humid. This may be done by wrapping
the plant material with paper to lessen evaporation. To
maintain the flowers' fragrance cover with cellophane
until ready for use.
For Rosy Cheeks in
Fruit Arrangements touch up with lipstick.
