I was
slobbering over the September 2009 issue of the German
gardening magazine
Garten Spass when I came upon an article
titled Garten-Ideen hautnah erleben (Garden-ideas
first hand experience) and learned about Duftnessel
‘Blue Fortune’. I was not sure what “Duftnessel” was so
I looked it up on Google and found that its botanical
name is Agastache (pronounced ag-ah-STACK-key),
that it will grow in South Florida, and that you can buy
plants online from
High Country Gardens which is located in Santa Fe,
New Mexico.

Well,
after reading that the plant is a great butterfly and
bee attractor, has leaves that smell like anise and mint
and intoxicatingly scented flowers, I decided I had to
have one. Or two; Or, fine, okay – seven of them.
I have
been lusting after a number of plants to start a
butterfly garden anyway and I cannot find these plants
around here without a lot of effort. The big box stores
are mostly boring with their expanses of the
same-old-plant being grown for the masses. Composted
manure I say! “I must have a choice and be unique!” I
yelled. Not really, but you get the point.
What
follows below are the plants that I ordered for my bee,
butterfly and hummingbird garden. I will post more
articles as this garden progresses.
