Rosary Pea

Common Name:  Rosary Pea, Jequirity Bean

Botanical Name:  Abrus Precatorius

Family:  Leguminosae

Methods of Poisoning:  Ingestion of seeds.

Symptoms of Poisoning:  Stomachache, nausea, diarrhea, weakness, cold perspiration, weak and rapid pulse, rectal bleeding, death possible following the chewing and swallowing of one seed or less -- Especially dangerous to children as the red and black seeds are attractive!   Unripe green seed pods look similar to edible pea pods or stringbeans.

Treatment:  Seek professional help immediately.
